David Bowie passed away in January 2016, leaving a legacy beyond this planet. However, he gave his last interview ten years before. And curiously, it wasn’t an interview for the media -one of those released in order to promote a new album or a forthcoming tour. It was just an extra feature for the DVD release of the sitcom Extras. It seems like a play on words or a pun, but it’s not.
Comedian Ricky Gervais was a hit at the beginnings of the 2000´s with his two short seasons of The Office (right, the one that was the funding inspiration of American Steve Carrel´s The Office). A few years later, BBC bet on him again and released Extras, the story of to losers trying to make a living appearing as background action figures in movies and series. David Bowie was the guest star in on of those episodes , playing a comedy role for the first time in his acting career.
A still of Lazarus clip from Bowie´s last album, Blackstar,
When the Extra´s DVD was released was of course filled with lots of special feature short films. And one of those was this brief and phony Bowie interview speaking about his experience in the set during the shooting and the pre-production and writing process. This last “fake” interview was also stated in the book “Bowie: the last interview and other conversations”, published in November 2016, only ten months after his death.
In this express satire, Bowie himself plays a fake Bowie, a pretentious, stupid and crappy star comedian who´s also a liar and laughs on his own pathetic jokes. The real Bowie shows for the last time a genius who’s beyond good and bad, right and wrong, celebrity and anonymity.
Today , Gervais is Britain’s number one and one of the world’s most successful comedians. Bowie´s legacy grows over each and every year.
Here’s that last interview.
